Douglas Kent, author of Firescape, educator, designer and project manager is leading a number of workshops in our area on how to landscape your house to increase its  the probability of surviving the next fire. One of these workshops will be held in the Poway City council Chambers, April 2 at 6 pm. Reservations 858-668-4415. more  The San Diego Count Water Authority has a very useful CD about selecting plants. Be sure to pick one up.

We just  got home from ones of these workshops in Escondido. It was very well attended, very informative and useful. Kent has a book, Firescaping, that was for sale for $11 and is available at Amazon.com for $14.21.

Who is PVRA?

The Poway Valley Riders Association was established in 1960 to foster horse and family related activities.  It has evolved into a quality facility on 14 acres in the heart of Poway, featuring a wide range of equestrian events. The Club offers a variety of Western and English riding opportunities which include Pony Club, Drill team, Polo, Gymkhana, Show Jumping, Cross Country, Dressage, Open Shows and Fun Shows. Additionally, 10,000 – 12,000 people attend the annual Poway Coors Rodeo at the PVRA to watch some of the nation’s best cowboys and cowgirls compete.   Whether you are looking for a fun show geared for all ages and riding levels or a yearlong competitive series, the PVRA offers something for everyone.

Fiddleneck can kill your horse! Image of Fiddleneck The picture above is of fiddleneck. Fiddleneck is a poisonous weed that is growing at PVRA and possibly your yard or where you ride. If your horse eats it, it could result in liver damage or death.

Conservation of Riding and Stabling Facilities

As the development of our region continues the stables and riding facilities are being threatened. If something does not happen, someday we or our children will wakeup to find that there are trails but no place to stable horses or to host events. PVRA's grounds are one of the few facilities in California that will continue beyond the life of an individual.

Other areas in the state are acting to conserve land. Farm land in the central valley is being conserved by the acquisition of the development rights of the land from the farmer owner. The farmer gets some money and knows that that his farm will remain a farm after he is gone. The San Diego Land Conservancy Coalition (SDLCC) is a land conservancy that coordinates public/private partnerships, promotes environmental education, and provides a networking and information center for San Diego County land conservancies. The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County Has some good references.

The State of California has a Farmland Conservancy Program Are a stables farmland?

And then there is the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource.
